Posidonia MED (Posidonia Mediterranean Eco Development) is an International non-profit Association that works to reverse the reduction of the Posidonia oceanica in marine and coastal ecosystem of the Mediterranean. It promotes a culture that respects the ecological environment through events, initiatives and awareness campaigns.
The organization was founded in 2012 in Spain as a natural follow-up activities connected with the Posidonia Festival, an annual event that takes place consecutively since 2008, the year it was born in Formentera, and connected with 2011 Posidonia Project activities.

Posidonia MED is based in Spain (Barcelona) where its main activities include the Posidonia Festiva. It has a representative association in Italy (Association Posidonia Project Carloforte, organizer of the Posidonia Festival in Carloforte, Sardinia, Italy) and an established international network of partner organizations.
Posidonia MED is composed of professionals from different sectors and volunteers who work and collaborate to promote ecological and environmental awareness and sustainable development through advanced communication, art and culture.

While there are many environmental organizations that deal with Posidonia oceanica, Posdonia MED is the only one that focuses on the conservation of Posidonia oceanica in the Mediterranean Sea.
The protection of the Mediterranean approach is completely innovative in that it goes beyond the general conservation of the sea and focuses on a living being in particular: the Posidonia oceanica as a key element for the conservation of marine and coastal ecosystems and as an essential body for life and the sustainability of our seas and coasts.

Mission: Reversing the trend to reduction of the Posidonia oceanica in the Mediterranean.

Vision: To be a reference entity in the Mediterranean basin in the defense and conservation of Posidonia oceanica.

Values: The entire activity of Posidonia MED is performed based on the values of sustainability, honesty, respect for the environment, playful learning, direct, cooperative, proactive and positive action.

Objectives

Defending and protecting Posidonia oceanica in the Mediterranean Sea.
Raising public awareness and make public opinion sensitive to the need of protecting Posidonia oceanica.
Making stakeholders sensitive to the need to protect Posidonia oceanica.
Promoting sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean basin.
Strenghtening the social base of individuals and organizations, creating an International Network of Professionals, Organizations and Citizens to form an Alliance in the Euro-Mediterranean area, promoting an organizations Alliance for the Posidonia.

Fields of action

Posidonia MED develops its action in these strategic lines of action:

Cultural Line

The main actions in this strategic area are:
-    Posidonia Festival: International Festival of Arts, Environment and Sustainable Development which has been carried since 2008.
-    Other specific cultural actions in defense of the Posidonia

Educational Line

Education, understood as the basis of social change, is promoted through the actions:
-    Promoting the development of the Environmental Education Center on the island of Carloforte (Italy), support to similar existing centers and promoting the development of new centers.
-    Implementation of an educational offer in different areas (schools, associations, companies, divers, sailors, etc.)
-    Promoting the popularization of science

Information Line

Thanks to information, population awareness for the protection of Posidonia oceanica is achieved. We will achieve this by spreading continuous information about the issues related with Posidonia and the Posidonia MED entity such as:
-    Definition and promotion of the specific measures in defense of the Posidonia.
-    Preparation of an informative documentary on the Posidonia oceanica and initiatives for its defense.
-    Creation and promotion of websites and social networks.

Lobbying Line

Only by putting pressure on the legislative and executive bodies in Spain, Italy, Mediterranean countries and European Union we will achieve an effective protection for posidonia meadows and the Mediterranean. In order to do this we will do the following:
-    Direct or indirect promotion of legal actions for the preservation of the Posidonia
-    Influence sectors directly related to the topic.
-    Avoid anchoring in areas of Posidonia.
-    Press to decrease in trawling.

Sustainable Tourism Line

Encourage sustainable tourism and Posidonia as a quality indicator of touristic destinations.
