Discover Posidonia Oceanica

Posidonia Festival, together with the Vellmari Diving Centre offers the opportunity of observing the Posidonia oceanica and its underwater ecosystem.

During the festival dates one can join the activities of the “Discover Scuba Diving” program by the organization PADI (normal price: 62 €; special price during the festival: 35 €).  This will consist of a first diving experience: an underwater discovery dive under the supervision of a diving instructor which will last at least 15 minutes.

The chosen place will probably be (depending on weather conditions) the reef-Posidonia barrier of the Es Pujols bay, the best example of the evolution of such natural monuments, whose value was declared, among other, Natural World Heritage.

The activity will take place in the mornings (10:00 to 13:00) of Friday 22, Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 for all those who have previously registered at the Vellmarí center.  The registration will be considered complete when the full fee has been paid to Vellmarí.

POPULAR SOWING OF POSIDONIA OCEANICA

Given the natural difficulties that Posidonia oceanica has for responding to both natural and human impact, as well as to the ever-greater decrease of the fields throughout the Mediterranean Sea, the scientific community is now concentrating its efforts on finding efficient techniques for sowing Posidonia on the seabed.

One of techniques now being developed -backed by agreements with the Instituto Mediterráneo de Estudios Avanzados (IMEDEA), both in Ibiza and in the Murcia region, is planting germinated Posidonia seeds.

This popular sowing has a new trait that makes it a pilot project: the use of natural stock produced by the unrooting of Posidonia plants due to natural phenomena (mainly sea storms).  Formentera is an ideal framework for the development and testing of this new technique of sowing seeds combined with uprooted plants.   The Conselleria of environment of the Formentera Council has decided to endorse the project of gathering and monotoring the Posidonia oceanica seeds and plants for sowing on the conservation area of the underwater fields, which currently the Vellmarí center (PITIUSUB S.L.) is carrying out.

Dates and locations

Two areas for sowing plants and seeds have been established.

- Zero height area: this area is made up of those zones where the fields nearly reach the sea surface (<1m in depth).
The sowing at Zero height area is open to all schools in Formentera, for ages between 8 and 14, and also for the general public.
It will take place on June 5th 2009.

- Degraded fields Area: This area is made up of places where the degradation of the fields is obvious, in deeper waters (around 10 meters) and autonomous diving equipment is required for sowing. It is open to volunteers with a diving diploma. It will take place on June 6th 2009
